Sadly, Richard died shortly after the publication of Affinity and Kindred and the exhibition opening at Norwich Cathedral. This blog documents and narrates the project's history and is kept in Richard's words.

I know what you're thinking - whatever happened to that pesky photographer who claimed to be working on a project between Norfolk and the Outer Hebrides?
Well I'm still here, struggling with the exigencies of project outcomes: a book and an exhibition - they take longer to organise than you can possibly imagine.
To support the exhibition I've made a successful application to the Arts Council to cover the costs of creating and touring the show around venues in East Anglia and the Western Isles. The tour begins at Norwich Cathedral in December this year and runs through until the end of 2017.
A project book also called Affinity and Kindred contains over 90 photographs from the project plus an introduction by David Matless, Professor of Cultural Geography at the University of Nottingham, and a response to the photographs by the writer, Will Self.
The next project I hope to undertake involves a journey following the route of the drifters and fishing lasses between Barra and Lowestoft during the turbulent days of the herring industry.
It means that I will be re-visiting many of the locations I've already been to for Affinity and Kindred, and I look forward to returning to the islands and coastlands.

I've given myself a notional deadline of autumn next year to complete my Norfolk / Hebrides project. During the last couple of months I've been closely viewing and reviewing the pictures made so far in order to examine the strongest themes and to refine the direction of my work over the next twelve or so months.
The eventual outcomes of the project will I hope include publication and exhibition, either of which may combine material from my disparate locations. The two themes I intend to privilege are (mainly boat building) workshops, and places of worship or ritual. Both represent strong cultural and historic traditions here in rural Norfolk and in the Western Isles, and the recording of their visual character and codes with their similarities and differences is for me fascinating and exciting.
